Skills shortage preventing KPO expansion

Yeah a lot of high end jobs are being outsourced, but seems like there full potential of Knowledge Process Outsourcing might not be realised. The talent pool seems to be very limited. And the quality of work needs to be improved too !

Skill shortage crunches KPO expansion in India

KPO industry needs to tone up quality: Report

What is really needed is good quality training and education to realise the potential. There are about 900 B Schools in India, but how many B School grads would you trust for doing KPO jobs like investment research, market positioning strategies, business analysis etc.

Seems to me that the other spin off of this trend would be to make a career in business teaching much more lucrative !

  1. We'll also see lot of KPO taking place in the field of education and core academics.

R&D cost advantage is surely going to be the next big thing for India.

GG,the day is not far when B-school Prof. will also be in global demand.

  2. The issue here is attracting the right kind of talent..KPO's still evoke the reaction similar to a BPO/Call Center..even amongst the educated ..
One of my colleagues recently joined a leading Financial Services KPO ..he had a tough time convincing his other'MBA" colleagues that he was not joining a Call Center..
Our management and engineering institutions are always accused of being out of touch with market..
Imagine how ready they would be for the international mkts which have more complex and evolved systems and processes...
R & D is coming of age in India...but like most new initiatives ,it is still percieved to be and expenditure rather than an investment..
Look at the sheer number of PhDs India generates ..If we could synergise those numbers in domains of any consequence,it would yield tremendous results..I wish the govt would intervene and facilitate centres of excellence for research at universities on a large scale ..We already have something like that at the IIT or IIM level but it needs to reach out to the lesser mortals rather than the elite...

  3. i see a lot of supply crunch for the KPO sector. unlike in BPO where you don't require a lot of skills, KPO require specific skills in say equity research, analytics etc but the numbers required in future may not be covered by B-schools.
A solution may be in training bright engineers, CA to handle KPO work requirement. Not sure whether there are some existing pvt institutions who runs such short courses for engineers and college graduates.

  5. More than supply, KPOs are facing the problem of attrition, and funnily, the only response they have to stymie the huge churn rate is giving more money. There is little focus on training or motivation.

  7. its been 2 months that I have been working in A KPO. I personnaly feel KPO is a better name given to low quality jobs which analysts can't or don't want to do in UK or US. Updating new models with current data, reading form 10K's and pulling data out of those and all sort of work which requires a bit of effort but least value addition. Models are already built you just update cells rest all other sheets are automatically derived. Analyst sitting in europe send sthe model and you update it and send back to him... this is the most high end work in KPO... KPO's pay well but one gets frustrated by quality of work. No motivation, no job satisfaction only money...!!!
