Getting my own domain name

In case you are wondering why I haven't been blogging too much, there are two reasons.

Twitter has been taking up my time for me to connect with social networks and other bloggers and social media enthusiasts, thanks to the absolutely cool Twitterfox - an extension for Firefox.

The other thing has been my own domain, GautamGhosh.net to which I have currently mapped my wordpress.com blog. Have to figure out if and how I'll integrate this blog on to that domain.

Gifting me logo for my blog

Without even asking, a reader of this blog, Prem Saran P, decided to gift me a logo he made for it. His gift really blew me away.

Wow!

Thanks Prem!

So what do you think, should I remove my "eyes" header image and replace it with this logo that Prem made so well?

Off the net for sometime

For people who are wondering what's up at this blog, I'd just like to update that my dad is admitted in a hospital in Lucknow and I'm in the city being with my parents. Don't know how long I'll be here, but I just wanted to share with all of you who take the time and effort to read this blog.
You might instead take a look at the comments in this post instead, some very interesting perspectives.

New Blogroll

From the Blogger in draft, I've got the new blogroll updated on the right hand sidebar.

It has the logo of the blog and the last post headline along with the date when it was updated. Cool, right?

Blog's name remains same

I got a fair bit of feedback over email and on this post that I shouldn't change the blog's name ...

So "Gautam Ghosh - Management Consultant" is what it will continue to be called :-)

Your Suggestions for naming this blog

Am realising that the name of this blog "Gautam Ghosh - Management Consultant" is quite lame.

So help me out.

You know the kind of stuff I blog about...(see labels on the right hand sidebar)

If you could name this blog, what would you call it?

Updates on my website

Have added a page for articles that I've written and which have got published somewhere, and the other is being featured in the news and other social media.

Anybody else using the Google Page Creator well? Any idea how I can add third party scripts to the pages?

Google tells me that

Every Google Page Creator site automatically has a mobile edition. So when people visit your site from their mobile browser, they will see a version optimized for their particular phone.

So anyone viewing the page over their mobile phone has any feedback? I can't see it on my browser thanks to my Account with my service provider...

Another update: Get HR news from Google news by taking a look at the "HR in the news" widget in the right hand sidebar almost near the bottom, below the "From the Blogosphere" widget. Hope you like it :-)

Mobile Phone Blues

It was a tough weekend for me as I managed to dunk my mobile phone in water and therefore lost most of my contact list :(

So just mail me your contact numbers at gautam.ghosh.1999 at alumni.xlri.ac.in

I utilised this opportunity to upgrade my phone too :D. That I did by scrapping two good friends who work at Nokia and giving my requirements (which basically was "reliable phone under Rs 10,000") - their verdict was unanimous - Go for the Nokia 6300. It's a sleek phone and comes with email and a free Opera browser too.

This model also has a Nokia PC suite so backing my address book and other data onto my PC and then on to the web shouldn't be an issue :-)

The other thing I noticed the two days I was without a mobile ("immobile" ;-)?) was that I didn't have too much idea about the time because my mobile phone also doubles up as my watch, alarm clock and notes application. Hmm, are traditional watch manufacturers seeing mobiles as competition? I don't think so...

Integrate Blogger Atom feed and Feedburner feeds

The best thing so far about the Google acquisition of Feedburner for a blogger like me is to find out how many people actually get my feed.

The way to do this is to go to Settings on your blogger dashboard, click on settings, choose site feed and then type in the feedburner URL. Check image below:

This will redirect your blogger account's feeds to feedburner to give you a full number on the people reading your feeds. Check the jump (more than double!) in my feedburner stats thanks to the integration of both the counts.

Rate the posts

Now you can rate the individual blog posts by clicking the stars below them, thanks to the really cool widget by Spotback.

The cool thing is the highest rated items also get ranked in the Top Rated Sidebar which you can see on the right hand sidebar of this blog.

A huge thanks to Osnat Vider from the Spotback team who mailed me and told me about their widgets :-)

If you are getting this blog via e-mail, then you don't really need to do anything :-))

Blog Readers

I thought you might enjoy this map (courtesy Google Analytics) of where the readers of this blog come from :-) Seems like the biggest "market" for this blog is India (obviously) and US along with Canada. Europe and UK have a few visits too.

Yes, language still determines the reach of the content. I wish online translation and search translation tools become more popular.

By the way, you can interact and know fellow blog readers by joining the community at MyBlogLog.

Search terms

It's kind of educative to see what people were searching on search engines when they find this blog.

Take a look at some of the recent search terms which led their users to this blog :-)

  • ABC CONSULTANT - I think I should refer this person to my friend Aditya Singh :-)
  • (media OR entertainment) AND (consultant OR consulting) AND resume - Obviously someone who knows Boolean search very well. Must be a recruiter. Sorry to have disappointed you, friend.
  • list of top Indian companies to work with - Ok this person obviously wasn't disappointed :-)
  • watson wyatt - must have been intrigued by the post on Watson Wyatt evangelising blogging.
  • Infosys HR generalist interview questions+pdf - Just a suggestion. When using Google to search for pdf documents, specifically use filetype:pdf as a search type. Hmm and HR generalists need help for interviews? Very strange ;-))
  • HR issues faced by pepsico , india - Sadly they haven't told me yet :D
  • deloitte canada - Ok ok, I know why they found this blog then !
  • paul mckinnon dell - Lots of people want to know why Paul left. Hmm...as a matter of fact even I do.
  • dell hell betweendate:20060701,20060707 - This person was probably looking for Jeff Jarvis' blog.
  • indian resume formats - Hmm, I didn't know there were nationally mandated formats for resumes. When did parliament vote for them :-) ?
  • management consultancy international level - Hmm.
  • employee Engagement Framework - Didn't find what you were looking for? Give me a call !
  • HR Issues in BPO Sector - Ditto
  • employee training and development at Cipla - Wow, that's very specific. Is this a prospective employee doing pre-joining homework?
  • job vacancies in tata consultants service for singapore airlines - Hmm, so that means someone is very specific for which project in TCS he/she wants to apply. I wonder why!
  • challenges of employee training - This searcher would have found something useful on this blog.
  • grow talent - Why is this person reading my blog instead of going to growtalent.com ?
  • deepak parekh noel tata indian business men - huh?
  • iflex attrition rate - Sorry you won't find that here.
  • vacancy at tata sky kolkata - Try searching on a jobsite, willya?
  • Harsha Bhogle contacts - Huh ??

That was entertaining and I learnt a lot about how people are finding this blog.

Statistics and Analytics

I never thought I'd become such a metrics nut but I have a confession to make. I use several different site statistics free services like GoStats, Sitemeter and of course Bloglines, Technorati and Feedburner stats to keep track of how this blog is doing, how people a discovering it, what are they reading, etc etc.

However ever since I managed to get my Google Analytics working I don't think I'll even use Clicky, forget GoStats and Sitemeter. The analytics from Google gives one so much sophisticated data that ideally one should be using it for e-commerce sites, not for blogs.

I am totally blown away at the way Google can give away such services for free. This application makes even Gmail look simple !

Stuck at the airport

My Kingfisher flight to Mumbai is delayed by two and a half hours. Thank god for free wi-fi to pass the time :-)

Well, it just cost me to forcefully watch a Windows Vista ad, after which I got a secret password to browse the net for free for half an hour.

Not such a bad price to pay. It was a fairly 'educative' advertisement about Vista and Office 2007

Moving to the new blogger

Blogger finally decided to let me move to the new version of blogger. With more than 1400 posts I think I was among the last people to be invited to move :-)

So am trying a new template, with a simplistic plain look. Even though the last K2 template was pretty good, I thought the font sizes were a little too small :(

And yes, I am excited about one thing on the new blogger, tags for posts, or "labels" as Google insists on calling it :-). The labels will be updated for the last 600 posts slowly over the next 2-3 days. So you will see the list of labels on the left hand column changing quite a lot :-)

Seems like it is a time for consolidation of logins. Yahoo told me to move my flickr "old-skool" account to a yahoo id too. If ever Yahoo and Google were to merge they would know more about every websurfer than most spouses ! :D

Oh and amongst other things January 2007 was the highest month by traffic on this blog !

Administrivia: Feedburner feed

This blog now offers a Feedburner feed along with Blogger.com's default Atom feed. So if Feedburner is your feed of choice, subscribe away!

April 11, 2006

Administrivia

Hmmm, the stat meter shows the count approaching 100,000.

Have updated my blogroll and have pruned it because too many high quality blogs were becoming difficult to keep a track of. The focus is on primarily HR, KM, Management related blogs. Have kept some India based blogs that I love reading also!

Keep the comments coming in.
