Longevity, not an goal? Innovation, yes?

Should longevity for businesses should not be an issue?

I remember reading "The Living Company" and the focus of the book was how could big organizations survive longer.

But there are another group of people Edgar Schein and Tom Peters being amongst them who are perfectly OK with organizations that make an impact, change the established order and then burn out.

So that does not mean that all firms that die out fast are innovative, most of them were probably bad anyway !

So don't concentrate on surviving. Focus on being innovative and making an impact !

  1. I think GE is a perfect example of an organistion which has always made innovation a way of survival and beating odds.

  2. Fundamentally, are adeptness, reflexivity and learning agility not inherent in the process of evolving & surviving? Species which have survived the longest (biologically) have been high on exactly these charactersitics.

And I believe these are the very charactersistics, coupled with passion for the mission, that Schein and Peters associate with high voltage companies.

The two are not exclusive from where I see it- IF you are in a contributive relationship with your environment; as compared to a exploitative one.
