An IT services company has asked me to come and address their Project Leaders and Managers on "Knowledge Management and Blogging".
The company wants to start internal blogging as part of its internal Knowledge Management efforts.
My talk will focus on the nuts and bolts of blogging and to evangelize blogging for this group.
Do you have any first hand experience with internal blogging within your organization? What are the challenges and differences compared to blogging "externally" ?

Very exciting! I think this may be the way to finally get some KM traction.

good luck...plz post the presentation for our knowdlege 2 :)
ReplyDeleteGautam,
ReplyDeleteI think first and foremost, when considering blogging from an internal knowledgement mgmt perspective, it must be acknowledged that the goals and objectives are very different from that of external blogging (although admittedly there is some gray areas where the two intersect).
First things first, though. Internally in an organization, tools enablement is critical. Getting an easy-to-use blogging platform up and running is an absolutely necessity...otherwise, you run the risk of folks not using the tool.
Next, you need to be thinking what will compel people in the org to use the tool...what information can they find on the internal blog that they can perhaps find nowhere else? Perhaps integrate your calendaring and IM tools into the personal blogs to make it an easy way to reach other employees.
Finally, I would observe that both information architecture/structure and navigation are key. If you're using the internal blog environment for knowledge sharing, metadata or some other way of structuring the information so that the experts are "findable" is key...there won't be any knowledge to share if one person can't find another. That's why it's also useful to integrate the blogging platform with your existing identity management/org directory solution...that way, an individual blog is easily findable within the existing directory environmnent.
Those would be my initial thoughts. Good luck, and I look forward to seeing your presentation as well.
